About Pelagic Sailing Club

It all started back in 1967 when Bill Stephens and Alice Wetherell Sweeney had a boat to sell. They took what was at the time a novel approach – instead of selling the boat to one person, they decided to sell shares to several people. Thirty people answered their ad. No one bought the boat, but after some discussion, they came up with a great idea – to form a club made up of boat owners looking for crew and crew looking for boats on which to sail. And so, with that purpose in mind, the Pelagic Sailing Club was founded.

Today, we are a club of approximately 140 sailors and a fleet of 40 sailboats concentrated in home ports between the Northshore and Narragansett Bay. Most of us are from Massachusetts but members can be found from Maine to Florida and as far west as Colorado and Washington. To join, applicants must be at least 21 or older and possess basic sailing skills. Club membership is also a perfect opportunity to resume your love of sailing after time away.

You’ll find us on the water just about every weekend from Memorial Day to Columbus Day and popular sailing destinations are Cuttyhunk, Gloucester, Rockport, Salem, Marblehead, the Boston harbor islands and Narragansett Bay. Our premier summer cruise of a week or longer has brought us to Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Coastal Maine, Isle of Shoals, Newport, Block Island and Long Island Sound. Often sailing continues post season with members chartering boats in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

In keeping with our mission to promote safety, good seamanship and fellowship, the Club offers workshops to improve skills and holds monthly meetings that feature notable guest speakers who discuss an interesting topic. Additionally, social activities are held throughout the year resulting in the formation of lasting friendships.

Without a doubt, the Pelagic Sailing Club is an excellent way to meet other sailors, improve your sailing skills and, most especially, to sail.
