Ahoy Pelagians!
Mid-summer weather has been coming at us in every form: heat, cold, rain, and humidity. Some of the swells have been rough, as many of us have seen. With storms in the forecast and named hurricanes already forming, let us all stay careful.
July has been a busy month for many Pelagians. Major events and activities have taken place and are underway as I drafted this monthly article. With our Southern Cruise complete – please the article in this issue of the WINDS – and our Northern Cruise underway as I write this. Meryl Jacobson and Grant Brandon have done an incredible job coordinating these events during the winter and spring. It is great to see that we have 10 or so boats more than 25 Pelagians for each cruise.
The tall ships for Sail Boston 250 have come and gone. Craig and Meryl coordinated the Pelagic participation where we had 20 or more Pelagians working as Ship Liaisons and/or dock hands assisting the captains and their crew, providing safety, controlling the visitor access to the ships, monitoring the docks and assisting in docking the big ships. Sail Boston was impressive and congratulations to all who participated. Our caps, polos, and jackets – along with the security badges – are attractive trophies we continue to wear!
On Monday July 27, four Pelagic members with three boats joined four other boats and crew at Jubilee Yacht Club for the Annual “Take-vets-out-for-a-sail” day. We had about fifteen veterans enjoying the water for 2-to-3 hours aboard our boats. This was coordinated with a JYC member with our club and the US Department of Veterans Affairs, North Shore division in Lowell. It was an enjoyable day as we came back to the club for grilled food and sides and then awards based on the boat’s activities regarding nautical identification of local lighthouses, navigation aids, landmarks, and history. Veterans received a certificate of accomplishment on specific topics.

Our next public meeting is at Savin Hill Yacht Club on August 20, 2026 at 18:30. Past Commodore Russ Vickers shall serve as chair of the nominating committee and will be reaching out to some of you regarding potential board member and officer positions. Please consider an offer to serve and feel free to contact any one of us regarding the duties and rewards/benefits of serving our members. Since 1967, the Pelagic Sailing Club has served its mission “to bring together competent skippers and crew.”
