Ahoy Pelagians
November is an interesting time to begin a term as Commodore. Most of us are putting our boats away, working through winterizing lists, and accepting that the next sail may be a good number of months off. At the same time, a new year for Pelagic is beginning, and I am excited about what lies ahead.
Over the past several years, I have come to appreciate just how much knowledge and generosity we have in this club. Whenever a boat project has presented a new challenge, I have been fortunate to turn to sailors with many more years of experience than I have. Members have shared advice, helped me think through problems, and given their time to help aboard Avalon. Anyone who has worked on an older boat knows the value of a conversation with someone who has tackled the same problem or an extra pair of hands when you need one. I am grateful for both.
Our annual cruises have also been a highlight for me. There is a particular pleasure in arriving in a harbor and seeing familiar boats, knowing there will be good company and another shared adventure. Those experiences, and the friendships that come with them, are a large part of why Pelagic means so much to me.
During my two years as Rear Commodore, I had the pleasure of interviewing and welcoming our crew applicants. They came with different sailing backgrounds and goals, but a common enthusiasm for getting out on the water with others. Those conversations gave me a fresh appreciation for what joining this club can mean to someone and for the part we each play in helping them feel at home.
As we look toward the coming year, I want us to continue making Pelagic a welcoming and comfortable place for all members. Whether someone has belonged for decades or is attending their first meeting, they should feel comfortable joining a conversation, asking a question, sharing an idea, or getting involved. Each of us helps create that atmosphere through the way we welcome and treat one another, aboard our boats and ashore. I hope we will all look for opportunities to extend that welcome throughout the coming year.
I would also like to thank Rich Afrikian for his service as Commodore and for the wisdom and guidance he has shared with me. I am looking forward to continuing to work with Rich as he steps into his role as Past Commodore. His experience will be a welcome resource as I settle into the job.
With Thanksgiving approaching, it seems fitting to begin my term with appreciation for the people who make this club possible. Thank you to the members of our board, and our boat owners, skippers, and crew for everything you contribute. I have gotten a great deal out of being a Pelagian, and I am excited to help others do the same.
