Location: Savin Hill Yacht Club 400 Morrissey Blvd., Fox Point, Dorchester, MA 02125
Start Time: 18:30
Dennis and Heidi from Portsmouth, NH: A World Cruising Couple
Dennis grew up with boats and started sailing as a child. During his active duty as a US Coast Guard Radioman, he took dinghy-sailing lessons, then graduated to displacement boats in his adult life, including his father’s boat, many bare-boat charters, and friends’ boats, including Italy, Tortola to Bermuda, Tortola to Newport, and Fiji to New Zealand. Dennis spent his professional career as a Landscape Architect, and now holds a USCG 50-Ton Master Captains license with an Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement.
Heidi’s dream, since she was fifteen, was to sail to the Galapagos and French Polynesia. This dream was key to her health after surviving violent crime as a young child. She learned to sail on a sailfish, raced O’Days and Prindle Cats, skirted a category four hurricane on a 100′ stay-sail schooner, and after writing to the Ecuadorian Government she studied marine biology in the hopes of living in the Galapagos. For her professional career she founded and co-managed Ethos, a strategic marketing firm in Portland, Maine.
When Heidi and Dennis met, they quickly realized they had a common dream … to live on a sailboat and sail to faraway places. So, after a couple more charters, they got married, bought Centime, a 40′ cutter rigged sloop and realized that their five-year escape plan had to become a one-year plan. They spent the next year and a half refitting Centime, and then cashed in their chips and took off on an odyssey, sailing from Maine to French Polynesia via the eastern Caribbean, Guna Yala (the San Blas Islands), the Panama Canal, and the Galapagos.
Heidi is now writing a book on transcending fear and living your dreams. Dennis offers delivery services, cruising consulting and passage planning services, and crews on others boats for various passages. He also works with Heidi on couples and women’s sailing enrichment. They live in Portsmouth, NH.
