Title: Public Meeting: Jais Brohinsky, Evolution of Navigation
Location: Savin Hill Yacht Club 400 Morrissey Blvd., Fox Point, Dorchester, MA 02125
Our speaker at the final Pelagic open meeting this year will be Jais Brohinsky, a lecturer at Harvard. Jais teaches a freshman seminar that looks at the development of human societies from cave dwellers to passengers in self-driving cars.
Part of the curriculum in that wide-ranging seminar deals with navigation, including basics such as position, direction, time, speed. The presentation will pay particular attention to the evolution of navigation and navigational tools and tables, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, including the problem of determining a ship’s longitude at sea.
Part of the presentation will be interactive, and the audience will be encouraged to follow along as Jais demonstrates “how to do it” on a white board. You may want to bring along a few sheets of paper or a notebook. Jais will be entertaining questions as the interactive portion of the programs progresses.
As usual, the program will start after the club’s business meeting, and will last about an hour and a quarter. We look forward to a very interesting program.
And, as usual, the pizzas will arrive around 6:30. We hope to see you Thursday night. Bring spouses, friends, potential members of Pelagic.
Start Time: 18:30n
