Boston to The Bahamas – What to Expect on the ICW

Rob Lawnsby
Founder Narragansett Sailing School & Charter narragansettsailing.com

format

Rob Lawnsby started sailing in his mid 20’s when he bought an old boat and moved aboard with his young family. With little knowledge and a good book on how to sail, they took off on a year’s adventure of cruising New England’s waters, and then cruised down the Intracoastal Waterway south. He got involved in building boats in Georgia and then Florida working his way up to Production Manager for Sovereign Yachts responsible for all aspects of the factory’s boat production including lamination, wood shop, assembly, rigging, and quality control. For the next 20 years Rob worked some and cruised some sailing everywhere on the Eastern seaboard and into the Bahamas traveling up and down the Intracoastal waterway a dozen times.

From there he embraced sales and yacht brokering. He started a Rhode Island boat dealership in 2002 representing Hunter and Mainship, eventually acquiring the Southerly sailboat line as well. In 2008 he started Narragansett Sailing School and Charter, and gave up the dealership in 2009 so he could focus on bringing new sailing families into the wonderful experience of enjoying the water under sail.

He is in charge of instructor development and course lesson plans for the school. Manages the sales arm of the charter operation, and is the service manager supervising the maintenance and upkeep of the school and charter fleet. Rob has ABYC certifications in Boat Systems and Marine Standards; which means he knows what he is doing when working on boats. Plus he is an ASA Instructor Evaluator, which means he can certify instructors to teach for ASA.
